Situated on the banks of the Vaigai River, Madurai was once the capital of the Pandyan rulers. The city&#8217;s name, derived from the Tamil word &#8220;Madhurapuri&#8221; (meaning sweet city), is believed to come from the legend that nectar fell from Lord Shiva&#8217;s locks onto the city. Today, Madurai is famous for the Meenakshi Temple, one of India&#8217;s largest and most important temples dedicated to Meenakshi, the consort of Lord Shiva.
