This river flows through the middle of the eastern ghats of several districts like Sundargarh, Kendozhar, Dhenkanal, Cuttack and Jajpur. Sankha is originated near the Jharkhand-Chhattisgarh border which is not far from Netarhat Plateau. Even in Jharkhand, South Kole also rises near Lohardaga on the other side of a porous river, which rises the Damodar River. These two sources have been kept in the Chota Nagpur Plateau. In place of the origin of Brahmani, it is legendary, where she fell in love with Satishwati, daughter of Rishi Parashar fisherman who later gave birth to Vaish Vyas, the compiler of Mahabharata.
