It is a tributory river of Sindphana and a sub-tributory of Godavari river.Bindusara originates in the hills of Balaghat near the village Waghira, in south of district Beed in Patoda taluqa. It is a hilly area. Various small streams contributes to the river. The city of Beed is situated on the banks of Bindusara river.Bendsura is a rapid and seasonal river. A reservoir; Bendsura Project (capacity 7.106 mm3) was constructed on the river in 1955 near the village Pāli, about 10 km south of Beed.

At some places the river is narrow and looks like a stream. The lack of vegetation and rocky and undulating terrain contributes to violent floods in heavy rains. These have repeatedly caused substantial loss of property and life in the history of Beed town, most recently on July 23, 1989 when a massive flooding of three habitations in the town caused a number of dead or missing and property losses of millions of rupees.

Location info:

Address: Beed,Maharashtra,India.District: Beed.Nearest City: Aurangabad.Best time to visit: Sep to March.

Climate/Weather:

Seasonal.

History:

Bindusara Empire:

Bindusara was the second Mauryan emperor (297 – c.272 BC) after Chandragupta Maurya. The Greeks called him Amitrochates – the Greek word for the Sanskrit ‘Amitraghata’ (Slayer of Enemies).Bindusara inherited a large empire that consisted of North, Central and East India as also the parts of Afghanistan and Baluchistan. Bindusara extended this empire to the southern part of India, as far as what is now known as Karnataka. He brought sixteen states under the Mauryan Empire and thus conquered almost all of the Indian peninsula (he is said to have conquered the ‘land between the two seas’ – the peninsular region between the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea).

Bindusara didn’t conquer the friendly Dravidian kingdoms of the Cholas, Pandyas, and Cheras. Apart from these southern states, Kalinga (the modern Orissa) was the only kingdom in India that didn’t form the part of Bindusara’s empire. It was later conquered by his son Ashoka, who served as the viceroy of Ujjaini (Ujjain) during his father’s reign.Ambassadors from Syria and Egypt visited his courts. He maintained good relations with the Hellenic World. Unlike his father Chandragupta (who was a Jain), he believed in the Ajivika (an atheist and anti-Brahamanical philosophy).

Bindusara’s life hasn’t been documented as well as his father Chandragupta or his son Ashoka. The philosopher Chanakya served as prime minister during his reign. During his rule, the citizens of Taxila revolted twice. The reason for the first revolt was the maladministration of Suseema, his eldest son. The reason for the second revolt is unknown, but it could not be suppressed by Bindusara due to his untimely death, but was later crushed by Ashoka.Bindusara died in 272 BC (some records say 268 BC) and was succeeded by his son Ashoka the Great.

Interesting things to do:

Enjoy the scenic beauty n explore the other nearby places.

Interesting things to Visit:

Kankaleshwar Temple:
It is situated in the middle of a small lake in the eastern part of the town.
