Constructed in the early 50\u2019s, this dam site commenced an era of concrete dams in India .A lovely lagoon with a vast extend of black waters, flanked by deep woods, makes this dam site a delight for the tourists. Besides its panoramic beauty, the importance in the dam is that, it is the chief source of water and electricity to the Mumbaikers. Considering the increasing demand, a new dam is planned to be constructed on the Vaitarna River, which will be commissioned in 2011. This will be the second highest dam in the state and probably put an end to the on growing water scarcity in Mumbai Upper Vaitarna Dam is a picturesque dam site, situated about 20 km from Khodala, in Thane District. Built across the Vaitarna River, it is the main source of water in Mumbai. The Lion Safari Park gives visitors an opportunity to watch the Indian Lion from special, closed vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Madh Island<\/strong><br>Madh island is a beautiful island off the coast of Juhu, in the picturesque rural area of Mumbai&#8217;s northwestern coast. One has to take a ferry from the fishing village to reach the island. Just 30 minutes ride away from the suburbs, it is a quick and peaceful getaway from the maddening crowds of the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Marve beaches<\/strong><br>The picturesque rural area of Mumbai&#8217;s northwestern coast is dotted with tiny beaches. Marve village with its clean beaches and beautiful bungalows is a popular spot, close to the city. A little further away are the more popular beaches of Gorai and Manori in the respective villages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Matheran Hill Resort (105 km)<\/strong><br>Matheran is a fascinating hill-station close to Mumbai. The lake and sanctuary is 25km from Mahuli village. Mahuli is located 92km north east of Mumbai. Close to the lake is the Mahuli fort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Vajreshwari Hot Springs\/Ganeshpuri Ashram<\/strong><br>Vajreshwari is known for its hot springs, the temple of Goddess Vajreshwari and the ashrams of Swami Muktananda and Swami Nityanand. It is a famous health resort and also a spiritual centre and visited by thousands.
