Irpu falls
About:
Irpu falls (or Iruppu falls) is situated at outskirts of Brahmagiri mountain range of Kodagu district. The falls is formed by Lakshmana theertha river when it jumps down in two tiers from a height of 52 mtrs (approximately 170 ft). The Irpu Falls, also known as the Lakshmana Tirtha Falls, are located in the Bhramagiri Range and is a fresh waterfall 60 m high. Amidst thriving green Western Ghats, Irupu falls is a major tourist attraction as well as a pilgrim spot. The river Lakshmana-tirtha flows nearby and it joins the Kaveri River at a later part.

A famous temple of Lord Shiva, known as the Rameshwara Temple, is situated on the banks of this River. There is another temple dedicated to Sri Ram, surrounded by paddy fields, from where it is ascend to the falls through natural forest. Except the waterfall all other places are inside the wildlife sanctuary and need permission to enter the sanctuary.
Irpu falls is a 7 km hike from Srimangala but no options coz permits are needed from Srimangala Forest Range Office. Irpu falls alone don’t require a permit though!

Legend says that, this falls was formed when Lakshamana shot an arrow to fetch some drinking water for his elder brother Rama, during their visit while searching for Seeta. Lakshamana theertha flows westwards & later joins river Kaveri. There is also a temple of Lord Rama.

Till Mysore the road is winding and full of surprise twists and turns. Hunsur to Nagarahole and inside Nagarahole itself the sights of tall and dense trees and animals make this a pleasurable road. Irpu rocks from onset of Monsoon till November-December

280 kmBangalore – Mysore – Hunsur – Nagarahole – IrpuThe state highway from Bangalore to Mysore (about 130 kms) is excellent and 4 laned throughout except for two small patches near ramanagaram and then srirangapatna where caution needs to be exercised. 5 kms before Mysore, take right on to the Ring Road towards Hunsur which is about 60 kms. From Hunsur follow the road to Nagarahole about 70 kms. Cross Nagarahole towards Kutta and then reach Irpu falls total of less than 20 kms. Watch out for stunning scenaries in and around Nagarahole and as you proceed towards Irpu. Expect to see Elephants, Wild Bison, Snakes, Mongose and lots and lots of Deer. Occasional lucky visitors have spotted a Tiger gingerly crossing te road.

Mysore and Hunsur are the safest bets for petrol. Diesel might be available in Kutta too, though not sure for petrol.

Nagarahole is open for motorists from 6:00 to 6:00 only and I guess only for 4 wheelers. Drive very slowly at 20 kmph inside Nagarahole as chances of animal sighting is high. Be wary of wild bisons as they might charge.Avoid leeches by applying lime juice on your exposed parts, especially feet. (Courtsey our guide)
Bhool na janaa… permit leke hi janaa!! Permit / Mirmala lodge bookings are done only at Srimangala.
Excess luggage can be left with the guard at the foothills. Travel light coz the hike is quite steep.
Avoid wearing shorts even if you use lime juice coz’ snakes ARE present up there.
Learn some essential Kannada / Malayalam words coz’ any other lingo is tough to deal with for locals
