The famous Vadakkumnathan temple is located in Thrissur, Kerala, South India. A very big temple in 10 acres is said to have been built by Parasurama, Vadukkumnnatha is a prominent Shiva temple, in downtown Thrissur. This is one of Kerala’s most ancient shrines, which also houses a museum of ancient wall paintings, wood carvings and art pieces of immense historical value.In a land crowded with several better-than-the-last temples, The Vadakkumnathan temple stands out as one of the oldest temples in the state of Kerala. A classical example of the Kerala style of architecture, the Vadakkumnathan Temple contains many decorative murals and pieces of art.The most striking feature of the temple is the Kuttambalam, which is the theatre hall for staging kuttu, an ancient dramatic form of art famous in Kerala.Trichur Vadakkumnathan Temple, three dieties, Sivan, Sankaranarayanan, Sreeraman. Inside the temple compound lies the tomb of Sree Sankaracharya. the largest koothambalam in kerala, is here constructed 120 years back and it is a treasure of exquisite wood carving and brackets on pillars.The ornamental silken Parasols unfurled, of several types and colours changed competitively. Above all the competitive and attractive fire works is conducted for a few hours.The important ceremony of this temple is Sivarathriand the idol of Vadakkumnathan is not taken out for procession. The only temple in kerala where the lord never comes out of his abode for the last several centuries.The Vadakkumnathan Temple is the venue of the world famous Pooram festival, celebrated annually in April-May. It attracts devotees and tourists from across the world and is one of the most popular festivals, combining the majestic elephant pageantry with the frenzied playing of drums and cymbals and rounded off with a fireworks extravaganza.The temple opens between 3.00 AM to around 10.30 AM and then again from 4.00 PM till 8.30 PM, which is around when the Trippuka, the last rite of the day, finishes. Like several other temples in this region, only Hindus are allowed entry into the temple.The deity Shiva is in the form of a big ‘mahalingam’. Here the main offering is ghee. The devotees brought ghee pours on the ‘lingam’ The years’ offerings has concealed the lingam. At present the devotees can see only a mound of ghee. As a miracle, the ghee does not melt or emit any smell, though in summer the temperature rises upto 35 degree C. It is said, part of the ghee is more than 1000 years old. The ghee will not be removed. If and when any portion of the mount is collapsed, the same will be sold. If a collapse is taken place, it is believed as a sign of some evil about to happen in Thrissur.

History:
According to legend it is belived that Parasurama installed the images. Parasurama, wishing to install an image of Shiva, meditated upon him, only to find an image of Mahavishnu up on opening his eyes. He installed this image as Rama, and then continued his meditation, at the culmination of which he saw a Shivalingam ,ie. Shiva on one side and Rama on the other. Up on further continuing his medication he saw Sankaranarayana or the combined form of Shiva and Vishnu.
