About:
The Peruvanam temple is at Peruvanam, Cherpu,Thrissur District. It is located about 10km south of Thrissur town on the Thrprayar route, near
Thayamkulangara bus stop, at a distance of 100 meters south.The temple stands on a sprawling 7 acre ground surrounded by a tall and hefty compound wall. The mathilakam (the bounding enclosure) is very extensive and has two dvarasalas, at west and east, the latter in ruins. Some 10-15 Aswatha trees punctuate the temple grounds with their wide spreading canopies.Lord Shiva plays a significant role in Hindu Mythology and thus thousands of temples and shines had erected to show respect and esteem to him. Peruvanam Shiva Temple in Cherpu is prominent among them. KeralaIt’s a circular temple of Lord Shiva extended over an area of 6 acres. It’s an ideal example of Kerala style structural design and its architectural value dates back to the 12th century. The unique idol of Lord Shiva and two Shivalingom on the same pedestal is the prime resource of allurement of the temple.The Shiva temple of Peruvanam is popular for the festival Peruvanam Pooram. The devotees enjoy the whole day festival of annual celebration with great
enthusiasm and jolty. In the evening, elephant’s procession begins from the neighboring temple that ends with the Shiva temple to pay homage o God. Thirty traditionally ornamented elephants have added beauty to the festival. The drummers also execute the traditional percussion music,Pancharimelam and Pandimelam. The main attraction of the temple is the unique idol of Lord Shiva, two Sivalinga on the same pedestal and he is worshipped here asErattayappan. The Sanctum Sanctorum is noted for its intricate carvings. Vattezhuthu and Malayalam inscriptions have been engraved on the walls of the temple and the temple is also known as Perumtrikkovil.People believe that Peruvanam was once a big forest. The word vanam means forest in Malayalam. Peruvanam means a thick forest. This temple has
artworks on the roof. It has a rare double-storeyed sreekovil (sanctum sanctorum), each presided by a deity of Lord Shiva. It is believed that Lord siva did
tapas (penance) on a certain tree and that changed into the present sreekovil.it is held in the Malayalam month of Meenam (usually, April). There will be an
Ezhunnallippu (Malayalam word which means taking out a temple deity atop a caparisoned elephant along with many jumbos(here totalling seven) to the
accompaniment of traditional percussion ensembles like Panchari melam or Pandi melam. The temple permits only Hindus. The worshiping time here are
from 4.00 am 10.00 am and from 5.00 pm to 8.30 pm.

services on the Island.Pallippuram Fort :Pallippuram fort was built by the Portuguese in 1503. It is one of the oldest existing European monuments in India. The Dutch captured the fort in 1661 and sold it to the State of Travancore in 1789. This fort is situated in the northern extremity of the Vyppin Island at Pallippuram. The catholic church at Pallippuram is an important pilgrim centre of the Christians.The Pareekshit Thampuran Museum :Its archeological museum adjacent to the Shiva temple in Durbar Hall Road,Ernakulam. This museum features collections of the 19th century paintings ,
Pre-historic monuments , Old coins in a numismatic gallery, Scriptures in stone & Plaster of Paris, Copies of mural paintings etc & the collection from the
Cochin royal family. In the earlier days the museum was the Durbar Hall of Cochin Rajas where guests were welcomed, and where official ceremonies
and meetings were held. Now under the State Archaeological Department.
