Kannur is one of the tourist attractions in Kerala being home to the well-known Pythal Mala hill, 65 km from the city. The Pythal Mala is a delightful hill station for the tourists, situated at a height of 4,500 feet above sea level, near the Kerala – Karnataka border. Tourists simply enjoy trekking their way to the top of the hill station covering a significant distance of 6 km. A reminder of this is the St. Angelo’s Fort built in 1505 AD by the first Portuguese Viceroy. Kannur’s history is marked by foreign invasions and the activities of colonial powers.The Portuguese factory built by Cabral in 1501 AD, was captured by the Dutch in 1633. In 1708, the British built a fort at Thalasseri (Tellicherry), just outside Kannur. The nearby town of Mahe was developed as a trading centre by the French in the 18th century. Around 1792, after the Mysore Wars, the British took over Kannur.

This isle is full of coconut trees. There is only a well here as the symbol of human presence. One can reach this place by boat from southern part of Moithu bridge in the national highway. When Dharmadam isle was an important trading center, this isle was in the possession of Chirakkal king.Fort St. Angelo:Facing the sea, this is one of the most attractive centers in Kannur district in Kerala. It is also known as Kannur Fort. This fort is 3 kms away from Kannur town in the western direction. The fort stands close by the Arabian Sea. This fort proclaims the strength and beauty of Portuguese architecture. The two sides of the fort facing the sea was built in a triangular shape. It was Don Francisco De Almeida, the first Portuguese Viceroy, who laid the foundation stone of this fort with the permission of Kolathiris in 23 October 1505.Alaram Wildlife Sanctuary:Alaram Wildlife Sanctuary is a situated on the slopes of the Western Ghats. Found in this tranquil sanctuary is elephants, sloth bears, sambar and mouse deer as well as fauna and reptiles. The highest peak of Katti Betta, covered with tropical and semi- evergreen forests rises to a majestic height of 1145 m above sea level.Parassinikkadavu (Snake Park):

Parassinikkadavu Snake Park signifies the great role played by Snakes in keeping the ecology of nature. The park is dedicated to preservation and conservation of snakes, most of which are getting extinct gradually. It has many snake pits and glass cases especially made only for king Cobras. In all there are about 150 snakes including spectacled Cobras, Monosialed Cobras, Russell, Vipers, Pit Viper and three magnificent king cobras.Arakkal Palace:3 kms from Kannur, is a beautiful palace of the former Arakkal Ali Rajas, the only Muslim royal family of Kerala that controlled parts of the coast and Lakshadweep.Tellicherry Fort:22 kms from Kannur, the fort constructed in 1708,was the military centre of the British and is now a historical monument. The S.A.I. Gymnastic Centre, an old Muslim Mosque.Valapattanam:The small town on the Valapattanam river is situated about 7 kms from Kannur.
