About:
This fort is 3 km west of Kannur town, north Kerala. and Also known as the Kannur fort, the St. Angelo’s fort of Kerala is a massive fort built by the first Portuguese Viceroy, Don Francisco De Almeida. It was constructed in the year 1505. St. Angelo’s Fort is a protected monument today as declared by the Archaeological Survey of India. St. Angelo’s fort of Kannur has changed many hands before finally being captured by the British in the year 1790.
The fort is a magnificent structure with massive walls and a deep moat. A mesmerizing view of the Moppila Bay never fails to enthrall visitors. The fort is situated very close to the sea and is separated from the sea by a strong sea wall. One can also get a great view of the Dharmadam Island that is located at a distance of 100 meters from the shore. The bay is a modern fishing harbor that is equipped with the latest technology that is required in the fishing industry.The fort offers a fascinating view of the Moppila Bay and Dharmadom Island. Dharmadom island, only 5 acres in area, is situated 100 metres away from the mainland in the Arabian sea. The Moppila Bay is a natural fishing bay. A sea wall projecting from the fort separates the rough sea and inland water. Today, the bay has turned into a modern fishing harbour, developed under the Indo-Norwegian Pact.Many people believe that there is a secret tunnel inside St. Angelo Fort. This tunnel was built so as to connect the fort with the near by Thalassery Fort which is 21 km from the Kannur fort. This under passage is said to be used by the soldiers to escape during times of enemy attack. St Angelo Fort is a triangular shaped laterite fort including moats, and bastions. You can still feel the echoes of canons and gun shots as you enter the fort.The natural and overjoyed beauty of the setting sun is a celebrated presence of the fort, accountable in gathering a large array of traveler from all over the world. There remain some significant holes of the outer walls of the fort, which are defining the forts efficiently. Aiming at farthest point signifies the holes at the top, hitting the enemy nearer means holes at the bottom whereas enemy is very near to the fort denotes holes underneath. History:
St. Angelo’s Fort was built in 1505 by Dom Francisco de Almeida, the first Portuguese Viceroy of India and is on the Arabian sea about 3 km from Kannur town. On August 1509 Almeida, refusing to recognize Afonso de Albuquerque’s as the new portuguese governor to supersede himself, arrested him in this fortress after having fought the naval Battle of Diu. Afonso de Albuquerque was released after three months’ confinement, and become governor on the arrival of the grand-marshal of Portugal with a large fleet, in October 1509.In 1663 the Dutch captured it and sold it to the Arakkal Royal Family in 1772. The British conquered it in 1790 and transformed it into one of their major military stations on the Malabar Coast. It is fairly well preserved as a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India. A painting of this fort and the fishing ferry behind it can be seen in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. The Dutch captured the fort from the Portuguese in 1663, then later sold the fort to king Ali Raja of Arakkal. In 1790 British seized it and transformed it into their chief military station in Malabar.

It is very near Kannur town. ,The mortal remains or’ Swadeshabhimani Ramakrishna Pilla, A.K. Gopalan, K.P. Gopalan, Pamban Madhavan and K.G. Marar are laid to rest near this resort.Moppila Bay:Moppila Bay is a natural fishing harbour, lying near Fort St. Angelos. A sea wall projecting from the fort separates the rough sea and inland water. The bay was famous during the Kolathiris’ regime as a commercial harbour that linked Kolathunadu with Lakshadweep and foreign countriea, in imports. Today , Mopilla bay has turned into a modernised fishing harbour.Sri Krishna Temple:This temple is located at Kadalayi about 6 km from Kannur. It is dedicated to Lord Krishna. An eight day annual festival is celebrated here. Traditional art performances like the Kathakali, the Ottamthullal, etc., are performed during the festival.Parassinikadavu:It is situated about 16 km from Kannur. The charm of this place is added by the serene `Valapattanam River`. The famous Sri Muthappan temple is situated on the beautiful banks, which makes the place a popular pilgrim centre. Boating facility and accommodations are available. An entertaining snake park is situated nearby, with 3 snake pits, 15 glass cases and 2 glass houses exclusively for King Cobras.Muzhapilangad Beach:This beach is situated about 15 km from Kannur. It has a stretch of about 4 km along the shallow waters, which is probably the only drive-in beach in Kerala. The clean waters here are the characteristic of this beautiful beach, which is well suited for swimming.Valapattanam:The small town on the Valapattanam river is situated about 7 kms from Kannur. This town is well known for its wood-based industries and timber trade. The port of Azhikkal and Azhikkal beach are located nearby.Arakkal Kettu:Arakkal Kettu, is located about 3 km from Kannur. It was the residence of the former Arakkal Ali Rajas, the only Muslim royal family of Kerala.

Found in this tranquil sanctuary is elephants, sloth bears, sambar and mouse deer as well as fauna and reptiles. The highest peak of Katti Betta, covered with tropical and semi- evergreen forests rises to a majestic height of 1145 m above sea level.Arakkal Palace:3 kms from Kannur, is a beautiful palace of the former Arakkal Ali Rajas, the only Muslim royal family of Kerala that controlled parts of the coast and Lakshadweep.Tellicherry Fort:22 kms from Kannur, the fort constructed in 1708,was the military centre of the British and is now a historical monument. The S.A.I. Gymnastic Centre, an old Muslim Mosque.Thodeekulam Siva Temple:Thodeekulam Siva Temple is located about 2 km from Kannavam on the Thalasseri-Mananthavady road in the Kannur district. This temple is famous for its mural paintings. This temple was constructed 2,000 years ago.Sree Ramaswami Temple, Thiruvangad:Sree Rama Swami Temple is located in Thiruvangad, about 23 kms. from Kannur. This temple is dedicated to Sri Rama and one of the most important temples in Malabar. The exquisite carvings in the temple were done about 400 years ago.Ezhimala:The Ezhimala is a small beautiful beach, about 53 kms from Kannur. This beach has a hillock nearby (286 m high).
