About Rourkela City:

One of the most important industrial cities of India, Rourkela is located in the Sundergarh district of western Odisha. This important industrial center is also known as “Steel City” because it is one of the largest steel plants in India. It is surrounded by hills and rivers. This area is rich in iron ore and for this reason there are many industrial plants. Due to the presence of steel industry, the city is considered to be the commercial capital of Odisha. The Steel authority of India (SAIL) has one of its biggest plants – The Rourkela Steel Plant is located here in 1954 – 55. The name Rourkela is combination from local tribal language of Sadri which means “Our village” (Rour means our and Kela comes from the word “kila” which means village.)

After the establishment of Rourkela Steel Plant, some parts of Rourkela town have been developed here. This city is popularly known as Ispat Nagar and also as the Steel City of Odisha. Rourkela Day is celebrated on 3Rd March every year. History of Rourkela City:

The Rourkela is the largest industrials township of Odisha. In the year 1945 the head quarter of Nagara sub-division was established at Panposh by the ruler Raja Udit Pratap Shekher Deo. It was declared the urban area in the area around the railway station of Rourkela in 1931.The facility of India’s first public sector steel plant was established in Rourkela with the help of German businesses, Krupp and Demag. This city is largest German colony outside of Germany in 1950 to 1960. It is a methological believe that the great epic “Mahabharat” was written by Maharishi Vyas at this place. Rourkela Township Steel and Civil Township of the present day is divided into two separate townships under the census of India. In other word Rourkela is called as Mini India because it is a cosmopolitan city. Here the people of different languages, cultures from different states of India reside.

Khandadhar Waterfalls : Khandadhar waterfall is the second highest waterfall in Odisha. It is located at Sundhergarh district. It is about 105 Km from Rourkela. Khanda means shord or Talvar and Dhar means dhara or a fall. Khandadhar waterfall at 244 meters and 12th highest waterfall in India. This waterfall has wonderful view with natural beauty. The beauty of this magnificent spring flows in the months of the monsoon when the water from the rivulet overflow.

Badaghagra Waterfall : Badaghagra waterfall is one of the most famous waterfall in Odisha. This waterfall is located at 10 Km from Keonjhar. The waterfall 200 ft high and it falls into the Ghagra River. The lush greenery near the waterfall makes it an ideal place for trekking and picnicking. Dense forest covering this waterfall makes it perfect destination for tourist.
