History of Puri City:

Puri is the holy land of Lord Jagannath, also known as the popular local name Shreekhetra, contains many ancient names in Hindu scriptures such as Rigveda, Matsya Purana, Brahma Purana, Narada Purana, Padma Purana, Skanda Purana, Kapila Purana and Niladrimahodaya.The Jagannath Puri temple was built in the 12th Century by the ruler of the Ganga Dynasty. In the first half of the twelfth century, it was that Anatavarman Chodaganga made the great temple in Puri in the memory of Purushottama, which have one of the thousands of names of Lord Vishnu. Puri, for several years, remained in the form of a holy place, until the British East India Company realized its potential as a seaside resort. Puri was the capital of Orissa till 1816, after which it was transferred to Cuttack.
