History:

The history of St. Joseph’s church, Idgah Hill is associated with the birth of the Archdiocese of Bhopal.On September 13, 1963, His Holiness Pope Paul VI created the Archdiocese of Bhopal and Most Rev. Dr. Eugene D’Souza was appointed as the first Archbishop. Archbishop Dr.Eugene D’Souza was transferred from the Archdiocese of Nagpur. Archbishop Eugene D’Souza was installed as the Archbishop of Bhopal on 13th March, 1963. St. Joseph’s Convent School, started in the year 1956, was the only catholic institution at Idgah Hills. Till then the Jehangirabad parish church and the sisters of St.Joseph were looking after the interests of the Catholics in Bhopal. The parish was basically nurtured and taken care of by the sisters of St.Joseph.

In 1989, the Archbishop Dr.Eugene D’Souza bifurcated St.Francis of Asissi Parish, Jehangirabad and carved out St.Joseph’s Parish at Idgah Hill. Till 1989, many priests offered daily mass in the chapel viz., Fr.Kokath, Fr.Joe D’Cruz, Fr.Hopsteve, Fr.George Amandus, Fr.Bernard Rosario as well as the Archbishop Dr. Eugene D’Souza to name a few.
