SHARVANABELGOLA
Jainism was born in Bihar in East India. When there was a great famine it is said that saint Bahubali along with his followers, came to Karnataka. The ruler of the Murya empire of the time Chandragupta, who considered Bahubali a sint , followed him and also undertook a fast unto death to propagate non-voilance. This place is the biggest pilgrim centre in Karnataka. With the patronage of the later West Ganga dynasty many jain temples were built on two rocky hills. Gometeshwara ststue on VIndyagiri in 981 attracted many people and became an important pilgrim centre. It is said that gometeshwara the son of Adinatha an early Thirthankara, stood without moving in mediation for a long time to uphold the doctrine of non-possessiveness, that white ants built their nest around him. This statue talks about this legend . at the foot of the hill are a big tank , a jain mata ( monastery) and the Akkanna temple of the Vijayanagra era is also here.
VINDHYAGIRI AND GOMATESHWARA STATUE ( 10TH – 12TH C / JAIN )
An 18 m high Gomateshwara ( Bahubali) , may temple groups and a stamba are located on a granite hill, which is 143m high. The hill faces the huge tank. Architecturally they are not special. There is a 12th century three- shrine temple, the peak of which is broken. There is manastambha in the 17th century Chyannana temple.
CHANDRAGIRI AND JAIN BASTIS ( 10TH – 12TH C/ JAIN )
There are 10 temples with a beautiful manastambha on the Chandragiri hills. Chamundaraya temple dates back to the 10th century, is on par with the Panchakuta temple of Kadambanahalli and it reflects the southern style of Karnataka area. The outside walls are attached pillars only. The parapet and the tower have been engraved without the layer pattern. Since the jains did not adopt the developing Hoysala style and continued in original style as seen in the 12th century Parshvanatha temple, they are not lively temples here as in Belur and Halebid.
