TEMPLE TOWN ( JAINA BASTIS) JAIN |
Mudabidri is another Jain town on par with Shrvanabelagola. It is 35 km from Mangalore. In this small farming town, there are 18 jain temples. More than half of them line up on both sides of the road , which makes it a temple town. They all look alike, with steep roofs , a manastambha in the front and made of stone. The west coast temples can be compared wwith the temple towns in japan. Jain temples are called “Basti” or “Basati” here. This is actually the Sanskrit word “vasati”. |
TOMBS OF JAINA PRIESTS ( 19TH C/ JAIN) |
Jains also believed in reincarnation. They believed that the dead would be born again in 49 days. There was no custom of building tombs. Here is is a group of jain tombs made of laterite which resembles the Meru of bali Island with its many layered towers. This could be a memorial for holy people. |
CHANDRANATHA BASTI (1429 / JAIN) |
This is the biggest and the main temple. Inside is a wide rectangular precinct. There is a beautiful manastambha in front of the long temple at the far end , there are four mandapas in front of the shrine with a corridor running around them. Since the roofing looks comlex it looks like there are number of rooms inside. It has a stone roofing on the first floor and wooden roofing on the second floor with decorations like those of Nepal temple roofs. Inside too the stone-suspended constructions resemble the wooden pillar beam construction. The pillars are circular and rich with Vijayanagra style. |
