| The present day Halebid was earlier known as Dorasamudra. This was the capital of the Hoyasala kingdom, which became prominent in the Mysore area in the 12th-13th century after the Ganga dynasty. The fort and pa;ace no longer exist. Now it is a small village with a group of temples. Hoysaleswara temple reflects the Hoysala style in all it’s grandeur. They started by developing on the later Chalukya construction style and the ultimate Hoysaleswara temple reflects the Hoysala style and the ultimate Hoysala style with it’s high quality of sculptures is tuly breathtaking. The platform has been divided into layers and musicians, animals, fantasy beings, humans, have all been sculpted in a line on to another set of lines sculpted in the same way. The tower of the temple is broken. Such Hoysala temples with broken towers are aplenty. This may be because there was no symmetry in the size and order of the structure. Maybe the people of Hoysala preferred sculptures rich with detail. This big temple has two Shiva shrines, two mandapas and two Nandi shrines. The mandapa continues into a wide space where there are high quality designed ceilings, entrance pillars made with lathe and exquisite pillar heads. It is one of the very rare Hindu temples. |

| 500 m from Hoysaleshwara temple is a group of Jain temples and 400 m from there is the Hindu Ketareswara temple. The Jain group is three temples. When compared to the Hindu temples, they are very simple with almost no decorations. These temples were built before Jain King Biddiga of Hoysala, converted to Hinduism. |
